Back Pain explains what back pain is and how it can be treated and prevented.
No, spondylolisis is not a fracture, it is actually, it is only a crack in part of the vertebral body!

Spondylolisis (pronounced spon-dee-lo-lie-sis) is a bony problem and involves the vertebrae itself.

A Fracture! How?
It can occur from direct trauma where the force is so great that a fracture occurs. The other way it tends to occur is as a type of stress fracture.
This is often seen in fast cricket bowlers. The problem can also result from general weakening of the spine from degeneration over time.

The fracture is usually stable because of the very strong ligaments around that region. It also usually affects one side but can affect both. If the force becomes too great where the strength of the ligaments is overcome, then the problem may progress onto a spondylolisthesis.
The problem is diagnosed from an x-ray. Treatment if required is conservative (meaning no surgery!). Exercises to strengthen the muscles around the trunk is useful and effective. Occasionally some joint and soft-tissue work may be required to help loosen some of the neighbouring joints, a physiotherapist will be able to advise.
